Rationale     The Digital Storytelling Contest (DISCONT) is a flagship programme of SEAMEO RECSAM, designed to inspire and nurture young minds across Southeast Asia through the fusion of storytelling and digital innovation. This contest is a unique initiative to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education within a creative and imaginative context, encouraging students to envision a world where STEM transforms learning into an adventurous journey of wonder and discovery.

     
      Through 3rd DISCONT, students and teachers are invited to create and share digital stories that explore how STEM principles and innovations can shape the learning landscape. Participants will craft short videos that blend creativity with technical skills, showcasing their vision of a futuristic Storyland where learning transcends traditional boundaries and becomes a dynamic, immersive experience. This competition is designed to empower students and teachers to see themselves as innovators and storytellers who can envision a future where STEM education is both impactful and accessible.

     
      This virtual contest is open to students and teachers across SEAMEO member countries, enabling wide participation and diverse perspectives. Participants will develop essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration by engaging with digital tools such as video cameras, animation software, and online screen-casting applications. Moreover, the contest serves as a platform to highlight the transformative potential of STEM in addressing real-world challenges while fostering a sense of curiosity and wonder.

     
        

As SEAMEO RECSAM’s flagship programme, the 3rd DISCONT reflects the Centre’s commitment to fostering innovation in science and mathematics education. This competition aims to:

Theme

This theme merges the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with the creative art of digital storytelling. It invites participants to explore and present STEM concepts through engaging and imaginative narratives.

  • STEM: Focuses on exploring scientific principles, technological innovations, engineering achievements, or mathematical concepts.
  • Storyland: Encourages the application of storytelling techniques to make STEM topics more relatable and compelling.
  • Where Learning Meets Wonder: Highlights the integration of education with creativity and curiosity, showcasing STEM as an exciting and inspiring field.

     
     

This event invites participants to explore the magical world where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) meets creativity. Through the theme "STEM in Storyland: Where Learning Meets Wonder," students and teachers are encouraged to create digital stories that make complex STEM ideas accessible and demonstrate the relevance of STEM in everyday life. Participants should narrate stories that connect STEM learning to a sense of wonder, imagination, and discovery. The goal is to show how STEM can transform ordinary learning experiences into extraordinary adventures, envisioning future possibilities driven by STEM advancements and fostering an engaging discovery experience.

Terms & Regulations    

Eligibility:

The contest is open to students and teachers from SEAMEO Member Countries. Participants fall into the following categories:

Category A: Primary school students of ages between 7 to 12 year old.
Category B: Secondary school students of ages between 13 to 18 year old.
Category C: Teachers teaching at the primary or secondary level.

     
     

Participation Format:

Category A: Students may participate individually or in pairs.
Categories B & C: Participation is strictly on an individual basis.
Categories A & B: Students must be supervised by a teacher or parent.

     
     

Submission Rules:

  • Each participant (or team for Category A) may submit only one entry.
  • Participants will have approximately four weeks to produce their submissions.
  • Stories must be related to the theme: "STEM in Storyland: Where Learning Meets Wonder"
  • Entries can be authentic, adapted, or originally written.
  • All stories must be in English.
  • Participants must avoid using sensitive or offensive language, including references to specific races, religions, or any harmful remarks.
     

     
Guidelines    

Submission Guidelines

  • The digital storytelling video must have a duration of 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Participants must upload their videos via the Google Form provided by the organiser, accessible through the given link.
  • In addition, participants must share a Google Drive or YouTube link to their video and include it in the Google Form for the organiser’s access.
  • A signed Consent or Assent Form must be attached when submitting the video.
  • The judges' decision is final, and no appeals or further correspondence will be entertained.
  • The organiser is not responsible for any accidents or injuries sustained during the contest.

     
     

Video Guidelines

  • Registration Details: Clearly state your Registration Number, Category, and Video Title at the beginning.
  • Storyline: Present a clear theme and convey the author’s perspective effectively.
  • Creativity & Originality: Showcase a unique and original design in your video production.
  • Audio & Voice: Use music and narration effectively to enhance audience engagement and understanding.
  • Pacing: Ensure a smooth progression of the story, maintaining audience interest throughout.
     

     
Judging Criteria    

The digital storytelling videos will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Storyline & Narrative: Ensure your story has a clear and coherent theme, and effectively convey your perspective throughout the narrative.
  • Creativity: The uniqueness and originality in the design and presentation of the video.
  • Animation & Visuals: The quality and effectiveness of the visual elements used in the video.
  • Use of Audio (Voice & Soundtrack): The integration of music and voice enhances the understanding and engagement of the audience.
  • Originality & Copyright: The originality of the content and adherence to copyright laws, ensure no infringement of intellectual property.
  • Engagement & Emotional Impact: The ability of the video to capture and maintain the audience's attention and evoke emotional responses.
  • Technical Quality (Resolution, Pacing and Editing): Focus on high-quality technical execution, including clear resolution, smooth pacing, and seamless editing.
  • Message & Purpose: The effectiveness of the video in conveying its intended message and purpose.
